UNION WA Jumping into concept-driven design for a quilter can seem daunting. All the same, 11 fearless quilters joined me at Saint Andrew’s Retreat House for a workshop that took them into the unknown.
Participants filled out worksheets that mined their personal histories, sketched their stories as simple motifs in circles, and made background grids for their projects.
A big stretch came when they explored making their motifs using a Naive Improv technique and inserting their circles into their background grids.
All of the projects became captivating reflections of their makers—their lives, their loves and losses, and their personalities.
When the retreat came to a close, everyone headed off with happy hearts for the holidays!
