LA CONNER, WA For Janine Hotzman, a quilt leader from Sitka AK, the pandemic was an “exhilarating time creatively for me.” She was given the chance to be in her sewing room guilt-free — not needing to help her husband on their fishing boat or head to the lumber store for home rehab supplies.
During the COVID shutdown, Janine created 30 Word Quilts. Made with upcycled thrift store finds and rarely used solids, the quilts are pieced or machine appliquéd, and machine quilted on her domestic sewing machine.
Word Quilts, playful and innovative, use a technique that Janine learned from her dad where words are obscured.

Here’s a sampling of the quilts on the third floor of the quilt museum in La Conner. They are truly exciting to behold.
