An exciting find from Niigata, Dragon Panels are vintage yukata cotton hand-dyed with a dynamic indigo dragon and wind swirl patterns on white.

Dragons in Japan are noble creatures that bring good fortune. Most Zen Buddhist temples, believing in their benevolence, have dragons painted on the door panels or ceilings of their assembly halls.

Japanese dragons, long and snakelike, have the head of a camel, the eyes of a rabbit, the ears of an ox, the horns of a deer, the paws of a tiger, the claws of an eagle, and the scales of a carp.

Panels are approximately 14" wide x 36" long.

Adventuresome quilters love to work with yukata cottons. The out-of-the-ordinary patterns add a special spirit to their projects.

Approximately 14” wide, yukata cotton is loomed for making casual, unlined summer kimono. One bolt measures 12 yards—the exact amount needed to make one kimono.

Artisans, using the chusen method, hand-dye this remarkable cotton with paper stencils and vivid colors.

Okan Arts sources 20- to 60-year-old yukata cottons in Japan from kimono stores, antique shops, flea markets, and pickers. The vintage bolts are shipped to Tokyo where they are consolidated for the journey to Okan Arts in North America.

Yukata cotton feels and performs like any high-quality quilting cotton.

Okan Arts recommends washing yukata cottons in your washing machine, set on Delicate with the warm wash/cold rinse cycle. Our preference for clothes detergent is Seventh Generation.

Please don’t throw your yukata cotton into the dyer but instead lay out or hang to dry. This prevents any creases from being cooked into your cotton from the heat of the dryer.

Press with your iron set on Cotton.
