Creative kokeshi, compared to traditional kokeshi, are like the difference between art quilts and traditional quilts.
This modern style emerged in the mid-20th century in Northern Japan, particularly around the Tōhoku region. Rigid regional designs were abandoned in favor of complete artistic freedom.
Although creative kokeshi are typically made from wood like traditional dolls, the types of wood and finishes can be wildly different. And the shapes can vary widely too!
Some feature helmet hair, babies, bows, buns, and more.
With the acceptance of these new kokeshi dolls came exhibitions and competitions. The highest accolade a kokeshi artist can attain is the Prime Minister’s Prize in the All-Japan Kokeshi Doll Competition.
Whether creative or traditional, kokeshi are recognized as one of Japan’s most cherished folk arts!
