two weeks of curves

two weeks of curves

By Patricia Belyea

LA CONNER WA  What was I thinking when I scheduled two back-to-back, weeklong Curves Workshops? Happily, the experience was a wonderful marathon—with incredible women, non-stop creativity, and lots of shared meals.

Here are pics of the first project of the workshop. Note how the center of each composition includes nine blocks intersected with curved piecing. And the nine-patch does not jog when the curved pieces are inserted. Also check out the micro inner borders—and one improv project!

The first project of the week was the Quadrant Quilt created with four 18" blocks of curved piecing. The second project was a much bigger composition—one big idea made with curved piecing. Here are pics of participants with their projects!

the end of an era

It’s the folks who’ve attended Okan Arts workshops who’ve made each event first-rate. There’s been true questing for new directions in quilt making. And a generosity of spirit that’s engendered welcoming and supportive groups.

In future, I’ll no longer be organizing and leading Okan Arts Workshops. Instead, I’ll be teaching at guilds, museums, retreat centers, and quilt shops. One day, I look forward to teaching in your neighborhood.

Thank you to all the students who’ve attended Okan Arts workshops over the last six years!

Jamie—Someone just needs to hire me. Typically a guild is the host. If you know any Guild Program Directors, maybe you can make it happen! PB

Patricia, I am so glad I took the time to attend the Curves workshop in your dear home in Ballard. It was wonderful. I am looking forward to making another piece with some of the wonderful fabrics I have purchased from you over the years. Best wishes in your new ventures!

I thoroughly enjoyed the “Creativity, Curves and Composition” workshop in Santa Cruz. Your inserted curves’ produced wonderful pieces. I like that nine patch with the inserted curves. Those curves just made the quilt POP—Thank you for sharing the photos that showed so many possibilities!! Thank you for teaching your curve techniques and I hope our guild will bring you back next year!!

I borrowed your book East Meets West Quilts from our local library. I loved the book so much that before I finished it, I returned it to the library, then went out to Barnes and Noble and purchased my own personal copy. Thank you for writing a creative and stimulating book that blends cultures, and is also beautiful to look at. It has inspired me to explore and incorporate not only eastern influences in my quilting, but others as well, particularly African. I was delighted to find that the Okan Arts blog I subscribe to is the same creative force behind this book. Again, thanks! You have provided a whole new dimension to my quilting. Oh, and the curved pieces are just lovely. I will add this to my quilting “to do” list. Maybe one day I can participate in one of your workshops.

The whole 5 days of inserted curves was a wonderful experience. I learned so much and enjoyed all the participants. Your help was outstanding and I hope to continue trying out more styles and projects.

I plan to visit November 23 with my cousin so I look forward to seeing you soon.

Kudos to all the artists in those two-week sessions. And to Patricia who will enable many more when she hits the road. New beginnings for all!
