A disciplined art form in Japan, ikebana translates at ”living flowers.“ Each floral composition, made with a minimal number of blooms, in a specially chosen vessel, is arranged to look alive and growing.

Years ago, I learned from Californian motorcycle painter Larry Hamilton that pinstripes are always gaudy colors. Tough guys with their hot rods never noticed that the tiny stripes wrapping their engines were cotton-candy pink or chartreuse green. So I played with the idea of teeny lines of blazing color traversing quilt blocks filled with flowers and solids. I created a hand-stitch pattern of eight branches, with sixty leaves and one butterfly, underscoring the garden motifs of the patterned fabrics.

The Art of Flowers was featured in Patricia’s book, East-Meets-West Quilts, as a project with instructionsMade with vintage yukata cottons, sourced in Japan by Patricia, plus contemporary solids.

The quilt, signed with Patricia’s applique´signature, comes with a Certificate of Authenticity and a custom linen bag. Shipping and insurance are free to a domestic US address.
