four september giveaways!
By Patricia Belyea
This month Okan Arts is giving away a bevy of Denyse Schmidt Goodies—her book Denyse Schmidt: Modern Quilts Traditional Inspiration, her popular Free-Wheeling Single Girl Pattern, and her new Free-Wheeling Single Girl Template Set. There are four giveaways, each valued at $91.00.
A graphic designer by education, Denyse has led the way with transforming traditional quilts into new and fresh compositions. Although Denyse is not old enough for this moniker, she’s considered the mother of the modern quilt movement.
A thoughtful teacher, Denyse leads workshops in her Brigeport CT studio that’s located in an inspired space—an old textile factory building. If you’re lucky enough to learn from Denyse, expect to expand your own ideas about quilt design.
In the hardcover book, Denyse Schmidt: Modern Quilts, Traditional Inspiration, Denyse reinterprets 20 traditional quilts in lively ways. Among them are Orange Peel, Mariner’s Compass, and Basketweave. Each pattern includes a lifestyle photo, a photo of the whole quilt, instructions, and illustrations. In the back of the book are a pullout pattern sheet and a complete techniques section. Published by Stewart Tabori & Chang, an imprint of Abrams, this is an amazing book for learning about historic quilts and how to make them in innovative ways!
The pattern for Free-Wheeling Single Girl quilt is Denyse’s witty take on the traditional Wedding Ring quilt. Made with 18 to 20 scrap fabrics and a background solid, the pattern gives you instructions for making a baby, twin, queen, or king quilt—plus a pillow sham.
NEW! To make the Free-Wheeling Single Girl quilt more accurately, Denyse has manufactured a three-piece precision-cut acrylic template set. You can use these templates with a 45 mm rotary cutter to save time.
Each giveaway winner receives the book, pattern, and template set!
THIS GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED. The winners are Kathy P of Vancouver WA, Susan L of Redmond WA, Marg D of Rotonda West FL, and Debbie M of Seattle WA.

I take a workshop for every new thing I want to learn!
I typically take one class and workshop each year. always learn something new.
I take workshops once in a while when they are not to far from home.
I hope to take one travel workshop in 2020 and other local classes.
I attend 2-3 workshops annually.
I have not attended a workshop
I sign up for workshops once or twice year. I always learn a lot! I would like to do more, but living in Hawaii is a limiting factor. And…. I’ve been wanting to make a modern version of the wedding ring quilt. Denyse’s version looks perfect.
Sadly, our local quilt shop closed last year. Have not taken a workshop in quite awhile! I get inspiration from tv, You.tube, and books from the library.
I take 2 to 3 a year to learn a new technique or take a class from a specific teacher like Denyse Schmidt!
I usually take workshops from my local guild 2-3 times per year. I also go on a road trip to a far away workshop once per year! WooHoo!
I do a yearly workshop (Alegre Retreat) in Gateway, Colorado, It’s about 4 to 5 hours away from my home by car. I attend workshops offered by my local quilt guild once or twice a year. I attended Empty Spools in Asilomar, California once. Getting together with other quilters is inspirational and beneficial to my creativity.
I treat myself to a couple a year either with my guild or fiber group and definitely a biggie that is a kind of retreat type workshop a year.
i must say it’s been a long time since i’ve went to a workshop. I just have to watch youtube videos to get my inspiration.
I take a workshop each year, if I can. I spent a day with wonderful Jen Kingwell this year!
I haven’t done workshops- i learn new techniques online or from books. 🙂
I love taking workshops, probably 5 a year.
I attend local workshops about once a year. I have not attended an out of town workshop yet.
I haven’t taken a workshop in many years. My inspiration and learning comes from looking at work of favorite quilters (like Denyse), learning from quilting friends and from You tube videos by generous makers.
I attend 4 – 5 workshops a year. I attend at my local guild and travel to nearby states to attend workshops.
Maybe 1workshop a year. And I usually only take classes to learn a new technique. I haven’t finished a project from a workshop in over 10 years. This book is the very first modern quilt book I ever bought. It’s one of my favorite books ever!
Love my Guild and have taken 3 workshops with them this year! Grateful to have attended a retreat in another state (where we workshopped painting barn quilts!) last month. I schedule sew-in workshops at our local church to work on community quilt projects. denise schmidt’s patterns inspire – & i can’t wait to read her book.
I have wanted to do workshops for years and can be pretty close a few times, but have never been able to make the timing work… this year I’m going to make it happen!
I sign up for workshops at least 3 times a year.
Ive never been to a workshop. But I’ve just signed up for the “free wheeling single girl sew along”. I’m so excited
I sign up for one every time I get a chance. Learning from the professionals is priceless.
I’ve never attended a workshop…I learn a lot from online tutorials and I get my inspiration from online blogs and books from the local library!
I take one every couple of years.
I go to a workshop or retreat at least once a year. I love to learn a new technique.
I sign up for workshop in directions and purchase way too many books. I am on the look out for contemporary quilts and dyeing now.
As often as I can! Have taken a couple online but more fun at quilt shows like Road to CA,
If I am lucky there will be 2 or 3 workshops that I can go to that are I my price range and I feel so blessed to be able to go.
I take 3 o 4 classes or workshops a year, mostly close to home. Still learning!
I try to attend 3 to 4 workshops a year. The guild sponsors the workshops and I like to support the guild efforts. It is inspiring to learn in person from the quilters I have read about.
I do not do workshops as often as I would like, darn it!
I have only done workshops through our local guilds when we have someone come in and at our state quilt show where they have nationally known Quilter’s do workshops. Would love to travel and do more but don’t feel like doing them alone
Many in the past but limited to internet workshops now.
I like to sign up for workshops as often as I can! I would really like to go to one of Patricia’s workshops, but had to coordinate as is on opposite side of country! However just discovered Denyse the “mother of modern quilts” lives Bridgeport where I have two friends! I love workshops because for one the obvious learning a lot about making we are making, but learning tips and info from my classmates, i have made many new friends from these classes! Am excited to learn about Denyse, love your newsletters Patricia!!
About 4-5 per year. We have many opportunities in my area.
I love to learn new things and try to take 2 or 3 Workshops a year. Looking forward to 2 in September.
Once a year, at Quilt Festival in Houston and occasionally at a local sewing shop.
Guess I’m not the joining a group type but I hope to have the time in the future
I have not had the opportunity to attend a workshop, but I would like to.
I try to attend at least one workshop a year close to home. My quilt guild has a number of learning sessions each year that keep us abreast of new techniques. The more I learn the more I venture out into new realms.
Usually I take 4-5 workshops a year and go to 1-3 quilting retreats a year. I’m eager to learn new techniques as well as to learn different approaches to techniques that I already know. There are some super teachers around that I’ll take any class they offer if I can manage it. I’ve gone as far as 150 miles away for some classes. I hope to be able to go on a quilt cruise someday.
Workshops when I can. Maybe 4 a year. Out of town workshops are difficult due to the cost.
Try to take as many workshops as possible but for the most part 3-4 per year.
I challenged myself to 68 new things in my 68th year. Quilting workshops are a favorite with usually two a year, guild retreat and my favorite — a mother-daughter class together every year around Mothers Day somewhere on the west coast. Perhaps it’s time to test the waters on the east coast. Denise would be a perfect fit for our steadily improving quilting skills.
Once a year, at Road to California convention. This year I’ve booked 5 days of workshops!
I rarely attend quilting workshops. I do watch tutorials on you tube and that has helped me with learning new skills.
I go to as many workshops as I can as I learn so much from them I even look for them when I am traveling. The workshops are always fun and I meet so many interesting quilters.
My guild meets bi-monthly. I feel as a member I must sign up for at least one workshop a year to support bringing in national teachers. This year I am taking 2!
I like to take a couple of classes at nearby quilt shops each year to try new tools and try to attend one workshop during short vacation getaways at least once a year.
I love workshops but not many in my area!
I love to take in person workshops as a way to learn techniques from the instructor and see what others are creating. I enjoy about 2 a year locally and 1 far away. I would love to visit your shop the next time I’m in Seattle!
I have not taken a workshop in a very long time. I am retiring next year and plan to make time for learning new things.
I rarely sign up for classes. I’m not sure why not, because I’ve enjoyed the few I’ve attended.
I love workshops. I am a member (and past President and past Program Chair) of our local quilt club and I sign up for all the workshops that we hold – and we hold 5-6 a year. Some are taught by our own members and some are taught by national instructors. I always take advantage of workshops because if I learn just one little thing – it is worth it.
I attend 3 to 4 workshops a year. Always ready to learn a new technique. Also fun to sew with fellow quilters.
I take a class on average of 6-8 times a year.
These days I find myself joining quilt-alongs online more than workshops. I have many wips from past workshops also!
Maybe once a year. It has to be someone special too.
I go to workshops rarely. But I take classes on line
I sign up as often as classes are offered. My local quilt shop doesn’t offer many, unfortunately, so I have to figure some things out for myself.
I’ve done fabric dyeing workshops but never a quilting workshop. I’d love to give it a try though!
I go to our guild’s retreat at the beach twice a year, 6th year i have been attending.
2 or 3 workshops offered by the guild, 1 or 2 awaaaay trips, this year was japan.
what ever strikes my fancy…from precise piecing to free form no ruler, scissors etc.
I would say i subscribe to a quilting life…sewing is easy, life is hard.
I would love to take a class from Denyse someday, but this would be a reasonable substitute. I’ve been collecting her fabrics for some time.
I take classes two or three times some years … others, only once. I am a pretty advanced sewer, so many beginning to intermediate level classes don’t interest me. 🙂 I also prefer technique classes to project ones. Great to learn new things!!
🙂 Linda
I take about 3 classes a year. Mostly close to home, but sometimes in other countries!
I use various quilters online resources, magazines like Selvedge to research and learn new techniques like (Pojagi), and I find lots of inspiration via Pinterest.
Not often enough, but once or twice a year.
I sign up for 1 or 2 a year.
Several longer multi-day workshops each year, plus classes at quilt shops, near and far.
I haven’t yet attended a workshop, but I would be interested if the opportunity were to arise close to home!
I usually attend 1/2 per year… I wish I could go more often. Always enjoy learning something new
How often do you sign up for quilting workshops—local and far away from home? Rarely. I try to find how to do things in books or on the internet for free, and use trial and error for things I think I might be able to figure out. Only if I really want to learn and can’t find another way do I take a class. It increases the cost of a quilt significantly to pay for a class.
Quilting workshops are fun and I learn so much. I have enjoyed two in the last few years. I go to guild lectures all year long.
Not as often as I would like but I have been to several at my LQS.
I have taken many workshops and loved them, my absolute favorite was with the ladies from Gees Bend, Alabama. They changed the manner in which I quilt for the rest of my life, it’s improvisational quilting for me.
Not as often as I would like , a few local workshops here in the PNW
It varies from year to year, depending on what my guild offers. This year I went to 2 retreats and 2 workshops. What a great year!
If I see a workshop on a skill I want to last. It with a quilter I admire I often sign up!
Usually twice a year but sometimes more often, depending on what is offered.
I sign up for local workshops three to four times a year. Now that we’re empty nesters I hope to do more destination workshops.
Take as many workshops as possible based on schedule and wallet. Probably 2-3 local per year and 1 away every other year-looking at creativity/curves in WI next fall.
Not often enough.
I don’t understand why Canadians are banned from this. I buy almost all my quilting needs from the States
Years ago I was involved in a quilting class at my church. I learned a lot about how to get started with quilting and we made a sampler quilt.
Quilting workshops are the best and I participate usually twice or more each year. Just enjoyed the Quilters of Gee’s Been workshop at The Gray Center in Canton, MS and am looking forward to a Sherri Lynn Wood workshop in Louisiana this December.
DENYSE IS A WONDERFUL ARTIST, QUILTER, AND TEACHER. THANK YOU FOR THIS GREAT GIVE AWAY.
I love workshops and wish I could attend many more than I do. Usually I am able to attend ones that are within 100 miles of my home.
I budget to attend at least one fiber art event each year: conference with networking, retreat or exhibits are all ways to learn. AND reading books with history along with contemporary work such as Denyse and your own texts.
Every year I either attend a workshop or enroll in an online to learn a new technique or tool. Then I try to designate time each week making items with that technique in addition to other projects. By year’s end I have several examples and make a complete project with the technique, then plan a 1 hour (how-to) program about the technique for our quilt guild. Examples: One year I worked with 1/2″ triangles, another year Suffolk Puffs (yo yos), and currently broderie perse floral bouquet blocks. Next year it will be folded fabric flowers (like kanzashi) for applique.
I am back to quilting after a gap of too many years! I used to try to take a workshop once a year close by when my children were small….hope to start again!
I sign up a little less than monthly. My guild does workshops at least 10 times a year, and I try to participate in those when I can. In addition, if I travel to a show, I like to sign up for at least one workshop there as well. It’s always rewarding to hear how people make their projects, and the social hour is generally delightful as well!
I attend a workshop once a year. I spend a lot of time considering how skills, teacher and end project compliment my desired knowledge/skill/yearly quilt goals. I save to attend all year so that I enjoy it fully.
I take one or two workshops a year, usually through my guild.
About 2 a year and I used to give a traveling quilt show once a year with quilts from the people I worked with. Lots of fun both ways!
j
I have never attended a quilt workshop.
I love taking classes and workshops. Especially if it involves travel or a quilt show/retreat. I probably do about three or four per year.
I’ve only taken a few quilting workshops, fewer than one per year.
I have never attended a workshop but really want to!
I’m fortunate to belong to a very active guild, that offers many workshops throughout the year. I’m a fast learning beginner, that loves my sewing machine.
Over the last few years I’ve taken over a dozen workshops as I explore machine quilting as well as color and design classes. I’ll travel up to 2 hours to take one on a technique that is of interest to me.
I would love to travel to faraway workshops; unfortunately not in the budget.
I don’t.. I can’t afford it, can’t travel, live out in the boonies, so don’t go!
I love workshops! I try to do at least one a year. It is such an opportunity to reflect and recharge.
I am 5 months into my quilting journey. Having a blast learning from YouTube. Have yet to attend a workshop. Perhaps soon though.
denyse’s quilts provide so much inspiration! what a great giveaway!
I feel like I learn so much about all things Japanese with each email and I just love being part of this! Sue
I sign up for workshops whenever I find one that might lead me in a new direction.
Seldom, perhaps 1-2x a year.
I always think I’d love to attend more workshops, but I am mostly interested in “figuring it out” on my own. I buy a lot of books, read blogs and see things on IG and FB and then let my mind go from there. Denyse S is truly one of my favs and used her fabric on my latest finished quilt.
I’m very excited to find this website. I can only attend one workshop per year., but find I can learn much off the internet.
I have not done that yet, it is on my list
I am 72 years old and I still take about a class a month. There are so many new things to learn and it is so important to keep our minds fresh and open to new things!!!!
This year I have been to one local quilting workshop (in Cambridge MA with a quilting teacher from CA). I have signed up for a three day quilting workshop next Spring in FL. In addition, I like to take local courses when I can on color theory or fabric dying which are related but not specifically on quilting. Being able to take workshops is relatively new for me as my kids are getting older and I have more time and resources to spend on my quilting.
Before moving a year ago, I took workshops every 2-3 months my guild. After a year with little sewing, I’m now signed up for a workshop this month with Beth Helfter at the Northwest Quilting Expo and planning to join the local guild next week. So excited to get back into the thick of quilting!
I have signed up for a few workshops , ones close to home. Thank you for the lovely giveways!
I sign up for a quilting workshop twice a year including the local STITCHES weekend in Southern California and at a local quilt shop – Super Buzzy in Ventura.
I rarely sign up for workshops, but I took many when I was new to quilting.
It’s been awhile since I did a workshop. I had been doing a class or two a year but haven’t done that in a couple years for now.
Probably three or four times per year. The local guild that I belong to (Columbia River Gorge) brings in a speaker/workshop leader in each quarter (including you!) and I try to take advantage of as many of those as possible. Also, my closest “quilty
friends” and I take longer trips together. We’ve attended classes at Houston, Paducah, Asilomar. and Northwest Quilt Expo.
I take classes or workshops about 4-5 times a year. I also offer workshops of my own about 10 or so a year. I have the Free Wheeling Single girl pattern, but I really need the rulers and the book! That pattern is so intriguing (as is all of your creations!) Thank you Abrams and Denyse for this amazing offering.
I usually take one ‘away’ workshop and one+ local workshop every year. They’re great for inspiration and tips and the quality of teaching is wonderful.
I sign up for quilting workshops 3-4 times a year, both local (within 1 hour’s drive) and farther away. I would love to win any one of these treasures! Thanks for running the giveaway.
I have signed up for two local workshops this year. I hope to do a long-distance Workshop once I retire next year. Perhaps I’ll go to Washington State?
I take about a half dozen workshops a year. I’ve “downsized” the number of workshops because of all the projects I’ve left unfinished after a workshop.
I average four to six a year. I love learning new things and traveling.
I rarely sign up for workshops, but when I do it usually involves travel.
I moved to a new area and I attend as many workshops as I can. I love to learn new things and it has been a great way to meet people. I also join a quilt guild.
Up to a half dozen including those offered by my local guild.
I’ve been quilting for over 30 years and have never signed up for a quilting class.
Because I am finding that I learn things slower, I find classes that I can repeat over and over on the internet works best for me. The only workshops I still would like to do would be dyeing of cloth because the amount of dye to have around is better when it is used by a group of people, not just one person who doesn’t need a whole lot of fabric.
Looks like some great inspiration! Enjoyed visiting Denise’ website!
I take all the workshops offered by my guild (about 2-3 per year) and a class or two at a local quilt shop. I’ll have to check out Denyse’s. Thanks for the giveaway.
For me, four to six workshops per year is about right—two local and the others at quilt shows or, rarely, at 5-day art quilt retreats.
I attend workshops locally in Florida two or three times a year. Today we are leaving for the quilt show in Paducah my first time there .I will be taking a class from Cindy Dedham. I’m so excited .
Such a wonderful combination. I would like to share with so many people.
I sign up for an online class about once every quarter and I do also gain tips from YouTube videos.
I am always signed up for a “class” not workshop per se, at my wonderful Santa Fe Quilt Shop. However, my current class could be considered a workshop of sorts as it’s an 8 month course in using templates and we’re making a quilt as you go quilt as the final product. I’ve not signed up for a workshop away from home yet, but the right one would definitely entice me. I’m still a beginner quilter so I’m easily intimidated and awed, by the expertise I see from many of the women in my classes.
I attend Quilting by the Lake for two weeks every year and take the occasional Quilt Guild sponsored workshop at home.
Workshops are a great way to learn or improve skills but I love to go at least three times a year to meet new friends!
I haven’t attended a quilt workshop in many years. But now that I’m fully retired, I expect that will change!
I have attended about 15 workshops in the past. I now live in a rural area and travel is difficult.
Typically I’ll take 2-5 per year. Depends onthe topic, the instructor and where. Love it and learning! Thank you for the chance.
I take 2-4 workshops through AQS each year, one at Runaway Quilter’s retreat, two at KY Heritage Quilt Retreat (Quiltaway) and three from my guild. So, approximately 10 workshops per year. Thank you for these giveaways!
I take two to three workshops a year, preferably workshops where I’m learning a new technique or design process.
I take a workshop two to three times a year. I love learning and being around fellow quilters.
Enjoy quilting workshops provided at my local guild and near-by quilt shops a few times per year.
I have managed to attend several annual conferences which were invaluable in learning new techniques. As I look back, I think the most important reason for attending a conference, for me, was the feeling of inclusiveness and being with like minded people for a period of time. Financially, I am no longer able to travel to learn new techniques, so I learn from books and/or video. What I miss most is dedicated time with others who share my passion. In retrospect, I am so grateful for the learning opportunities that are now available with modern technology.
at least once a year and many times twice
Just one workshop! Looking forward to retirement. Thanks for the giveaway!
I try to attend local workshops at least once a year but there are not many.
Currently I sign up for quilting workshops about once a year. After many years of nearly monthly workshops, I’ve decided it’s time to use what I’ve already learned.
Thanks for the opportunity — I love Denyse Schmidt’s work!
I attend a workshop at least once a month. We have a very dynamic quilt guild and a gifted guild member will teach a speciality technique each month. In addition we have a 1-day workshop
from a nationally recognized quilt artist once a month; I usually attend those as well. I have not attended any workshops out of my area as yet, but love Japanese art and textiles. Perhaps I can manage to attend one of your workshops in the not too distant future.
I’m unhappy and ashamed to report that I’ve only sign up for quilting workshops about once a year, BUT I am very motivated to self-teach.
I generally sign up for workshops at least once or twice a year, but with retirement on the horizon I’ll be stepping that up in the future!
I like to attend 1 to 2 workshops that are challenging. The single girl quilt has been on my bucket list!
I seldom sign up for workshops. It would have to be pretty special to make me want to do it.
at least 2X/yr, and my quilt guild has “sew-ins” at least 2X/yr 🙂
I’ll be in LaConner to learn from Patricia soon.
I have not attended a workshop presently. In the future however, who knows?
Every month I sign up for the guild Study Group where we learn something new or have mystery quilts. We have outside instructors come to this meeting with special classes. Learning is my life long journey!
Usually I sign up for local workshops/classes 2-4 times a year. It has been years since I’ve traveled to other locations for a workshop.
Used to go afar for several years. Now I stay closer to home and attend my quilt guild classes.
I sign up for one or two workshops each year with my local quilt guild. I have taken workshops at the Road to California Quilt Convention, and I did attend improv circle class at Craftcation in Ventura, CA.
I recently registered for my first workshop in 27 years and can’t wait!!!
I live in a place far from workshops so I depend on the internet for techniques and such.
I take a workshop a couple of times a year at a retreat I go to. We always have a person who is pretty local and a great teacher of their particular skill.
I take at least one workshop a year, and try to use the technique right afterwards to remember.
I am not proud to admit that I have never attended an actual workshop. I have thought about it so many times but I do not feel that I am a strong enough sewer. I do follow you and have always thought that one day I will sign up for one of your workshops as I am “quite the fan of yours”. There are not many classes or workshops in my area but I am prepared to take an adventure trip!
Recently relocated to NJ from Seattle WA, I am still trying to find my way to quilting path on the east coast. Normally I would attend 2 classes per year to learn new techniques or to work and learn from someone who’s work I admire.
I take a workshop once a year, usually a distance from home so that it doubles as a vacation. Thank you for always offering fantastic giveaways. This one is especially relevant to me because I’d love to join the single girl sew along on IG right now!
I try and take a class at the festival of quilts here in the U.K. to learn new techniques
I sign up for at least 4 workshops each year, sometimes more. I try to take 2 at my guild and I always sign up for some at MQX.
I have not attended a workshop recently. I love the idea of attending one in a lovely location and doubling it as a vacation.
I use to travel for workshops…of course living on San Juan Island, Wa. means that I travel just to get to the mainland! I would go to the mainland or west coast states a couple of times a year. Now that health issues have become a bit more wearing and retirement income a bit more restrictive, I generally travel only once a year for a workshop…that trip becomes my “vacation”. Books are always a source of inspiration and learning..so I sometimes splurge on a book…trying to let a book go for every new book I get!
I take about 2 – 3 workshops a year. More if I can afford them!
Usually once per year–often for a wearable or accessory.
3-4 workshops per year.
I don’t sign up for as many workshops as I’d like to. Right now it’s two a year but I’d love to add at least one out of state.
I belong to a large local guild so I sign up for classes thru my guild 3-4 times a year. It’s fabulous
I sign up for quilting workshops about 2-3 times per year. Most are local and offered by my quilt guild or by another local guild that let’s us know they have spots free. When I travel and know I will have time in our schedule to take a class — I usually look around the area we will be and find local quilt shops to see what they may be offering and I will want to do some fabric shopping in the area too. We are heading to the Seattle area in a few weeks, but timing does not align with your classes. We will come visit your store while we are out there.
I try not to sign up for a quilting workshop before I have finished the project from the last workshop. Unless the workshop that just teaches techniques. I can always take time to learn a new technique.
How often do you sign up for quilting workshops—local and far away from home?. If the subject interests me, I sign up for workshop as often as I can afford them and I have the time. I just returned yesterday from a 3-day Shibori dyeing class with Debbie Maddy. It was in Sisters, OR, which is about a 200 mile drive. I learned so much about indigo and the best way to get good, clear definition in my shibori fabrics. Then for the last 4 years, I’ve attended Quilters Affair, which is 5 days of workshop before the Sisters Quilt Show in July. I am also the workshop coordinator for my guild and attend most of those workshops.
I take a couple of classes or workshops a year. This year was a huge trip to Iceland with a quilt class at the end of the trip. The whole adventure was fabulous!
I sign up for as many local workshops as time allows, this year I attended 3. I attended 1 workshop for which I had to travel. Thanks for the lovely giveaway, I love Denyse’s style!
I go to at least one weekend or week long workshop a year and realy look forward to it!
Two suggestions: 1) link the “shop” site to the listing of yukata fabric selections; 2) create an area on the website which outlines the different classes and what they are. (They may be mentioned in the email listings, but for some reason, although I signed up for the list, I only get mailings ever 3-4 months…) See you in December! Aloha, Jeanie
When our quilt guild offers workshops I’m generally one of the first to sign up!! I don’t do workshops that aren’t close to home – number 1 – I don’t have the money to do that, and 2 – I don’t have the time to go out of town. I’m retired, so now I have so much free time….NOT!!! 🙂
I only sign up for a class about once a year now at my local shop. I have been quilting so long it has to be something really new for me to spend the time and money.
I sign up for any workshops offered near me but there are not a lot–I live in a more rural area–but I do enjoy them!
I take workshops within the state 2-3 times/ year And one outside the state once per year. 🙂
I take workshops when I can and I teach a couple each year too. They help me keep fresh.
I have been enjoying workshops with South Bay Area Modern Quilt Group.
I take at least 10 workshops per year,,,,every teacher brings a new outlook..mostly near home
I like to do at least one every year. My Clark County Quilters guild in Vancouver, WA brings in amazing teachers.
I usually take 2-3 workshops per year. I love to learn new techniques and be inspired by pattern & color.
I belong to four quilt guilds, so I take a new class or workshop locally several times a year.
This year I signed up for two far from home and attended both.
I try to attend at least two a year.
Betsy Gibson
Circles and modern, a new approach. I will attend 4 workshpos this year.
I used to do a workshop every year…but lately I see at home and invite friends over to see with me.
I took a workshop on Hawaiian Quilt design and one on Hawaiian Quilting several years ago, then made two quilts from my original designs. Mostly I learned from my mom.
I will usually do a workshop when traveling to a show and staying for a couple of days, guess it seems part of the package, and easier to schedule than when at home with other commitments. There are always new ideas and inspirations!
I am aways looking for workshops for interesting learning experiences and also for workshops with teachers that intrigue me. I try to manage one multi day experience a year but add at least a one day workshop per quarter.
As often as possible. I average about 5 a year. About 60% I travel. Last year I decided to take more free motion quilting, surface design, bag making, hand work…anything non-traditional piecing
I usually just sign up once a year close to home. I have family obligations these days.
I am always looking to take workshops but find it hard to locate workshops I’m interested in attending. Many are for more traditional blocks, appliqué, English paper piecing or techniques I’m not interested in.
I usually take 2 workshops per year in addition to about 4 one day class sessions per year. I pick and love the workshops with an out of state quilt/art instructors. I am fortunate Our San Francisco Bay Area quilt guilds are able to book Some Wonderful legendary quilt instructors/fiber artists.
Close to home, I would love to go and learn from far reaching places but budget and time doesn’t allow.
I have taken several workshops over the years. All have been taken through the 2 guilds I belong to.
I try to take at least one or two workshops per year locally. My retirement budget does not allow for more.
On average, I take 2 workshops a year.
This year I went to a 6-day workshop far away and I’m signed up for a 3-day weekend in October. I’m a member of a monthly 12×12 quilting group, which isn’t exactly a workshop, but very stimulating. I plan to do more workshops, local and ata distance, in the future.
This year I have had to resort to online workshops- last one being “exuberant appliqué” – Aletha Ballard; loved it!!! I look at fabric differently now!
Typically I attend 1-3 workshops per year, all local, unless you count the ones during my trip to Japan …
I live on the Big Island of Hawaii and workshops are very hard to attend as they usually involve extensive travel to the mainland and expense…once a year we have Quilt Hawaii in Kona and I try to attend at least one workshop…mostly my quilt group, Volcano Quilters, shares tips and techniques with each other…
I try to sign up for workshops at least once a year, usually close to home. The venue location and workshop cost some times are an influence . Thanks for the chance to win this book , pattern and WOW the templates, also!!
I have done a local workshop per year and one local quilting retreat. I just signed up for your Inserted Curve workshop and will be traveling all the way across the country to participate.
I sign up for local workshops 3-4 per year but would love to travel to a few throughout the US.
It has been quite awhile since I last attended a workshop. My favorite ones were with Paula Nadelstern and Nancy Lee Chong; I learned so much!
I have been lucky to attend a couple of workshops put on by our guild.
Thank You for the opportunity to receive some generous gifts from one of my favorite fabric artists. I will be attending a class at Quilt Weekend in Maysville Ky which is about an hour from my home.
I usually take several workshop at quilt shows especially Houston, go on 1-2 quilt retreats and my quilt Guild has one Friday a month that a member teaches a technique.
I rarely have the opportunity to participate in workshops, but when I do I thoroughly enjoy the experience and always learn something. Thank you for offering this giveaway as I love Denyse’s Fabrics and patterns!
I don’t sign up…yet. I just started quilting last summer. With working and competing demands on precious vacation time, I haven’t yet prioritized workshops. But the day is coming soon! Thank you for running this give-away. Denyse Schmidt is an inspiration!
I find inspiration by attending workshops locally whenever I can—which is once or twice a year. Our guild is a small one, so we don’t have the resources to bring in teachers from far away. I also attend classes at the one local shop still open.
I sign up for at least 2 quilting workshops a year. My favorite is–of course–the Yukata workshops
I take one retreat a year and and two or three classes. My friends and I belong to a local guild and attend lectures through the guild.
A couple of times a year. Most at sewexpo in puyallup
I have taken only two workshops but plan on signing up for at least one in the coming year.
I usually sign up for one or two
workshops close to home— in Tallahassee. Our local quilting guild has workshops yearly with instructors from all over the country. Also, guild members often present workshops that are very informative and enjoyable.
I love learning new techniques but only pay for classes or workshops maybe twice a year. Hard for me to commit to a date too far ahead. I enjoy reading your blog.
I used to take 1 workshop about design every year at Empty Spools Seminar at Asilomar Conference Center in Pacific Grove. Now I’m a caretaker for my husband and Mom, so I’m taking an online workshop with Susan Shie. We work in a sketchbook every week. Some of the imagery will become quilts.
I generally take classes locally but have traveled to Texas for appliqué academy. I generally take 2 classes a year.
I prefer learning from books or videos. It’s the introvert way.
At least once a year. It’s a great way to learn new ideas and techniques as well as to interact with the teacher and other class participants.
I try to take one or two workshops from my two quilting guilds. They work hard to get the people to come and to set up the area for the workshop. Thank you
I sign up for at least 3 workshops. I am only able to sign up for local workshops due to my small farm that I do not want to leave unattended over night. (Of course, the advantage to that is I’m home sewing.) I use what I learn in each of the next projects I work on.
As my finances allow, I sign up for one quilting retreat a year. As a community college teacher, I get a 4-week break between summer and fall quarter, and this is a perfect time to focus on being creative with fabric. This year I went to Mississippi to study with the Gee’s Bend quilters!
If it were possible, I would go on a retreat every other month!
I continue to learn from national and international speakers whenever I can reach out and grab a workshop– Often at one of my 3 local guilds, either by another member or an outside guest. Quiltcon gives me many opportunities to both listen and learn and I NEVER miss a Quiltcon. AQS Paducah and Houston are also frequented. So I would say about 6 times a year at a minimum.
I try to sign up for workshops at least 2-3 times per year.
I am lucky to have a mother-in-law and grandmother-in-law who have taught me some of what they know about quilting. Other than that I like to take them locally at Drygoods Design.
Local workshops I sign up for 1 or 2 a year.
I always learn something from each workshop, sometimes a small little thing, or a whole new technique. I usually take a couple a year, but this year it should total five!
I try to attend my local guild’s workshops every few months, including a class with Denyse. Went to QuiltCon last year, and looking forward to joining Patricia on her Tokyo Quilt & Textile Tour in January! Love Denyse Schmidt designs & fabric.
Usually about once a year, mostly to learn a new technique.
Rarely do I go to workshops. If local I can go otherwise no because I cannot leave my husband.
I try to take a workshop at least once a year. But quilting newsletters, blogs, and YouTube keep me creatively busy as well.
I’m ready to take a new workshop now! Life has kept me busy but now is the time as winter is on the horizon.
I seldom attend a quilt workshop. I
prefer working on my own. When I’m
in a group – it seems like there is more
talking and other interruptions and I
lose concentration. I’m a good hermit.
Love the giveaway. I can spend hours
pouring over the book and playing.
thanks for the offer.

I have not been able to take workshops, so this would be such a fabulous experience! I usually quilt from books.
I attend local workshops at every opportunity. MQG is excellent in that it offers workshops through out the year. I hope to attend the oak arts work shop in Hawaii as I’ll be in Oahu at that time. Need to work out logistics
Would like to attend workshops in person, have considered finding workshops and then planning our vacation or fun short trips to areas of interest. I find it easier to participate in workshops or sewalongs on line when available.
I would love to win these very fine items from Denyse Schmidt.
In answer to the question, I usually sign up for at least 4 workshops a year. More local ones but I will travel too.
I generally take a few workshops per year thru my guild and or the annual AQS Show in Daytona Beach. I also take classes online and I’m a subscriber to The Quilt Show – another great learning resource!
I sign up for quilting classes as often as I can afford them. It is never often enough!
My goal is to attend two or three retreats per year. I prefer to attend those near my home, but I am willing to travel depending on the instructor.
I have been quilting for many years and only occasionally do workshops, mostly locally. However, if I may travel for a workshop with someone I’d particularly like to learn from..
I usually attend the annual Sew Expo in Puyallup, WA where there are a lot of quilting classes. I also read quilting books and watch videos from Bluprint.

I take any that my guild offers, usualyy 2 or 3 a year. Alway learn something!
Lately, I haven’t signed up for any workshops, and I really miss them. I used to attend Empty Spools Seminars every year, and take several guild workshops each year. I’m now the caregiver for my husband, and have little time away from him. The internet is my teacher these days.
I try to get to two workshops per year. I’d like to attend more but it just never seems to happen. I keep myself busy making charity quilts mostly. I’ve been watching Denyse for quite a while. I’m originally from Bridgeport Connecticut as well.
Go to as many as I can which isn’t as much as I want while working full time.
I usually stick close to home. I would love to go to a cruise one or just an overnight one.
I take a workshop as often as possible, hopefully at least every other month (6 per year). I love being a lifelong student!
About once a month…I teach also so time to take classes is often sporadic.
Used to take one or two workshops a year at the lovely Folk art school where I worked but recently moved from there so we’ll see what chops up in the Spokane, WA area.
I try to take a workshop whenever I cannot figure out how to do it myself.
Probably 4x/year
I take 3-4 classes at our RV resort each winter. I am hoping to be able to take one of the LaConner workshops soon.

I take a 2 week quiltmaking workshop annually.
I take a 2 week workshop in Indianola annually.
I usually take 2-3 workshops a year. I try to remember that someone who makes great quilts isn’t always a great teacher, so I do some research before signing up.
I take a quilt workshop every couple of years. I find that as I make more quilts, I have less of a desire to follow an established pattern. I like to get in the studio and throw things up on the design board!
My local guild offers 2 workshops a year so I try to take those. I also like to see what classes are being offered by the local quilt shops.
I like the workshop held once a year in a town 25 miles from my home. I also attend local workshops for our guild here.
