quilt retreat: day three
By Patricia Belyea
UNION WA Our morning started with Joe Cunningham sharing his sources of inspiration—old quilts and the world around us. After Joe’s philosophical musings, we walked out of Saint Andrew’s with our cameras, iPads and sketch books to find inspiration right in our own backyard and parking lot.
Back in the sewing room, we were charged with cutting up fabric and sewing as fast as we could, based on what we captured in our cameras. Not exactly the images but the feelings and design motifs of our pictures.
More quilts appeared and Joe told us stories about the concepts behind them.
The sewing continued on earlier projects and the day’s assignment. It seemed that everyone was happy with whatever they were doing.
After dinner we gathered in the Great Hall, under cosy quilts that are found everywhere at the Retreat Center. Joe performed “Joe The Quilter,” his one-man musical, to all of our delight.
