Inserted Curves Workshop with Patricia Belyea

the first patricia retreat

By Patricia Belyea

UNION WA Earlier this month, ten adventuresome quilters ventured to Harmony Hill Retreat Center for an immersive Inserted Curves experience. Just as everyone enjoyed the Sunday night Welcome Dinner, a magical flurry of snow covered the farm-style campus.

Monday and Tuesday were spent inserting curved design elements into 21" nine-patches. These central pieced units were then double-bordered to make 35" square quilt tops. Many of the participants chose to use Workshop Kits from Okan Arts that provided five indigo over-dyed yukata cottons and two solids.

Take a look at the people and projects:

In the last two days of the Retreat, the students moved to a larger-sized project and the challenge of creating an overall quilt composition.

The Retreat ended with a family-style breakfast on Friday morning. The Storm of the Century, predicted to arrive by mid-day, encouraged a few to leave early to beat the promised blizzards. I drove back to my home in Seattle, arriving just as the first snowflake fluttered down.
