LA CONNER WA All the women who gathered for the May 2017 Yukata Quilting Workshop in La Conner were alums. Each one had participated in one or two earlier Workshops and came back for more!
This May’s Workshop, from a Sunday night to a Friday morn, offered a time to learn something new—curved piecing, beginning and advanced. Vintage Japanese yukata cottons were added to the mix, resulting in creative projects with non-stop smiles.
Neophytes made big blocks filled with curves of their own designs. Four blocks were combined to make simple quadrant quilt tops.
More advanced students played with curved insets, curved details, and bigger curved compositions.
A highlight of the Workshop was a visit by Sylvia Pippen and Kitty Pippen. Kitty, now 97, pioneered the use of Japanese textiles in American quilt making. Her quilts won awards at all the major quilt shows thirty years ago. Plus Kitty authored her first book at the age of 80: Quilting with Japanese Fabrics.
It was a wonderful week, working on curves with a group of wondrous students. Already ten of this year’s participants have signed up for next year!
