doodle piecing with patricia belyea
Join Patricia for her signature Doodle Piecing/Curves Workshop where you learn to create a curvy-pieced quilt top of your own design. Translating simple doodles into block designs, you transfer your line work to freezer paper for making your patterns. Using her step-by-step approach, Patricia gives quilt novices and veterans alike the skills to design and sew multi-directional curves that are completely flat.
Patricia, with her daughter Victoria, will be taking over the Methow Valley Inn with a workroom, and pop-up shop of vintage Japanese cottons for the two-day workshop.
Materials list provided, all levels welcome.
Sample: Floating World, 38″ x 38″
The sample quilt is made with four 18″ blocks, each containing six curves pieces. The design includes concave, convex and S curves, with precision intersections.
You will complete four blocks, of your own design, during the Workshop and finish the quilt when you get home.
On Sunday afternoon, Patricia will discuss the many ways you can add curves to your quilts—from a single element to uber-involved curvaceous compositions. You will leave with the experience and confidence to continue curved piecing on your own.
your teacher, patricia belyea
Patricia has taught curved piecing across the US, in Canada, and in the UK. She enjoys the ah-ha moment when her students perfectly sew together their first curved pieces. She then encourages them to use this knowledge to transform their future quilt projects.
Patricia is the founder of Okan Arts—a Seattle-based company that imports vintage Japanese textiles. Plus she authored the book East-Meets-West Quilts (ABRAMS 2017) that features improv quilting made with Japanese and Japanese-inspired fabrics.
