2-Day Belyea Workshops in Seattle :: Okan Arts

a hands-on learning experience

Doodle Piecing—Complex Curves In this two-day Belyea Workshop, you make a curvy-pieced quilt top of your own design. You start by translating simple doodles into block designs. The linework is transferred to freezer paper for making patterns. You then walk through the steps for making a fabric version of your custom patterns. You leave with the confidence to add curves to your future quilt projects.

your teacher, patricia belyea

Patricia takes joy in teaching quilters how to add curves to their fabric compositions. Using her step-by-step approach, she gives quilt novices and veterans alike the skills to design and sew multi-directional curves that are completely flat. Patricia has taught curved piecing in the US, Canada and the UK.

lunch in patricia’s studio

Lunch each day, made with fresh and healthy ingredients, is served upstairs in Patricia’s sewing studio. A danger zone for fabric lovers, the walls are lined with baskets of vintage Japanese yukata cottons for sale!

student raves

“So enjoyed the workshop in the midst of Patricia’s shop and quilts. An inspiring atmosphere in an intimate space. Learning to use color and shape in a freeform way—Doodle Piecing—is a liberating experience. Had to have the hands-on practice to now, explore on my own.”

Agnes B, Jersey City NJ Doodle Piecing

“I totally enjoyed the unique, creative and fun experience the workshop offered. It forced me ‘out of the box.’ The instruction was clear and complete. I learned new techniques that are not common knowledge. My quilt is different than any I’ve made previously and quite lovely.”

— Nancy W, Burien WA Doodle Piecing

“Patricia’s teaching style is friendly and process-focused with guaranteed flat results. It was a pleasure to work in her cozy studio/classroom and she kept us happy with coffee and chocolate. I’m well on my way to a first quilt with this process and look forward to many more.

— Mary S, Seattle WA Doodle Piecing

“Patricia’s classes were just what I needed: hands-on instruction with just a few students in each class. I got lots of personal attention, and she had great samples to show. The samples really helped me visualize the techniques we were learning. For someone who is fairly familiar with sewing, but not as familiar with quilting, Patricia’s easy-going and fun lessons helped me immensely.”

— David H, Shoreline WA Doodle Piecing
