smiles at the joe retreat

By Patricia Belyea

UNION WA  What makes a person smile? A true smile means that the person is living in the moment. And that’s what 16 people experienced as they dove into their quilt assignments at The Joe Retreat in early February.

Led by Joe Cunningham, the Retreat at the picturesque Hood Canal stretched from a Welcome Dinner on Sunday night to a Farewell Breakfast on Friday morning. The best part was four full days in the Workroom. Participants kept busy “sewing more and thinking less.” Laughter, music, and good food fostered happy times.

Moving out of personal comfort zones and exploring new ideas pushed participants forward in their quilting approaches. Joe’s project challenges produced a range of creative responses that were as diverse as the delightful characters in the workroom.
