the joe retreat: session one

By Patricia Belyea

I am reporting on much happiness on one of the saddest days of all time. Two truths—one good and one horrendous happening in two special places. It is all hard to comprehend.

Monica at The Joe RetreatHOOD CANAL, WA  Seventeen quilters (plus two amazing husbands) gathered at Saint Andrew’s for a five-day retreat with Joe Cunningham and me.

The participants all challenged themselves with Joe’s assignments. Even though the quilters received the same direction, the resulting compositions were as different as the individuals themselves.

We ate incredible food—all grown by the chef or locally sourced. The Joe Retreat, 2015

Late in the afternoons, Joe led a hike for anyone who wanted to get away from her sewing machine.

Most importantly, we laughed a lot.
