four january giveaways!

This month’s giveaway features Kai 8″ Professional Tailoring Shears. There are four January giveaways—each valued at $60 per pair.

Kai Pro Shears are the sharpest scissors you will ever own. On my quilting pal Joe Cunningham’s recommendation, I bought myself a pair and can attest that they’re amazing.

Made with high carbon Molybdenum Vanadium stainless steel, Kai Pro Shears will cut YOU as easily as they breeze through fabrics as light as silk and as heavy as leather. So watch out!
TRUE STORY: In October, I ran a 5-person Doodle Piecing Workshop at Okan Arts. Each participant was supplied a tool kit that included a pair of Kai 8″ Pro Shears. All five women bought a pair of Kai 8″ Pro Shears before they left!

WORKSHOP TIP: Tie a strip of fabric to one of the handles of your Pro Shears when you attend a group event. Mistakes happen and someone could pack your scissors and take them home. Just one little piece of fabric can save you a whole lotta heartache.

THIS GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED. The winners are Peggy J of Marco Island FL, Mary H of Millstadt IL, Laura B of Darrington WA, and Terry C of Medford OR.

To participate in the January giveaway, answer this question in the Comment Box below: How much do you use scissors in your quilt making and sewing activities?

HOW THIS GIVEAWAY WORKS: The January 2018 giveaway drawing will be held at midnight PST on January 31, 2018. Okan Arts Giveaways are open to US residents (sorry to my Canadian and international friends), 18 and older, void where prohibited. One entry per person. Four lucky winners will be chosen with a random number drawing for the Kai 8″ Pro Shears. The winners will be notified within 24 hours. Each winner must respond within one week of notification or her/his giveaway will be forfeited. A list of Okan Arts giveaway winners can be obtained at any time from Okan Arts. 1. Karen A says:

I use my scissors all the time, probably more than my rotary cutter.

    • Laura Dorr says:

I was watching Quilting Arts, one of my quilt TV programs. Quick background…I was born and raised in south Seattle. I loved home ec classes starting in 7th grade. I have been sewing ever since. In my 20’s I feel in love with the Japanese culture. Art, fabrics you name it I could not get enough information on the subject. Low and behold my son married a Japanese girl and now in my 60’s I have been to Japan twice. Highlight of my life. When my daughter in laws grandmother passed away I received a large box of her kimono’s and obi’s. It brought me to tears. I was so honored.
So, back to the subject. Pepper Cory was on the show doing Japanese projects. One thing led to another. TA DA I found you. I don’t get to Ballard often since I live north on Camano Island 61 miles from you. I am retired and sew almost every day. I get together with a sewing group once a month and in between that 2 of my friends come to my house or we go to their homes and sew, laugh, go on field trips to fabric shops and just have fun enjoying each other and our passion for fabric and quilting. I am old school. Still use scissors for garment making and clipping threads, which I am very OCD about. Things just need to be tidy. I need a new pair of good scissors since I have sharpened mine beyond there usefulness.
I know this is a long story, but I am so EXCITED that I found you. I can’t wait to come on a field trip with my friends and meet you face to face.
Oh, and my grandson is named Kai. Full name Kaito Owen Miyata Dorr.

Yay to good scissors, tools if the trade!

Scissors are as important to me as thread for quilting. I could not create my quilt without either one! I take good care of my scissors and have had the same three pair for over 20 years and counting.

  8. Katrine Eagling says:

Daily or every day I sew, which is almost daily.

Scissors still matter! I grew up sewing with scissors, not rotary cutters, so they hold pride of place in my sewing room. Often when I am going to free-hand rotary-cut fabric for a quilt, I will use scissors to rough-cut my piece first. I prefer to use scissors over rotary cutters when I cut out garment patterns. The quilts I made are smaller representations
of an animal or a car or something along those
lines. They are appliqued so there are lots
of small pieces (and large ones) so I’m
continually cutting material for them. I do
some sewing of clothes (not as much as I did)

  305. Renee Atkinson says:

I have various scissors nearby at all times. I have three snippers one by my machine and one by my cutting table, and one by the ironing setup; sharing the space with rotaries. The only long shears (as my grandmother called them) are a pair of old Fiskars set between the machine and cutting table. Time for a new pair!!
