Batiks add a quality to any quilt that reminds me of the richness of combining fiber with nature. And yet the tightness of the weave and sheen of the fabric entices.

  64. Danielle Nunn-Weinberg says:

There are many reasons that I love batiks, so I hope that I can express with words those ideas that are given life through colour. One of the first things that I noticed with batiks is that colours seem to be more vivid and saturated. The patterns and designs always seem to me to be more organic and fluid than ordinary textiles, with a rich visual texture on each side of the fabric. Can you really say that there is a right or wrong side when each has its own minute variations that are equally beautiful? While the first batiks which I encountered many years ago were stiff with residual wax and difficult to work with; I am enchanted by the wonderful hand of the high quality cotton used now; some of them even feel rather like silk. I am constantly trying to find ways to utilize batiks in lieu of the one-sided traditional printed textiles. In the end, it still comes down to the wonderful colours, from the most delicate of pastels to the intensely saturated rainbow and beyond. I am actually just starting my very first quilt, and while shopping for fabrics, I made a beeline to the batiks happy to finally have a good use for them.

  65. Lisa Jenni says:

In my eyes, batiks are the most versatile fabrics in fiber arts and classic quilting. They are perfect blenders, even with prints or “primadonna” hand-dyes, but also make an excellent focus fabric. Despite their slightly higher price point, I feel they are some of the most economic fabrics because of the unlimited use of both sides. Crisp and durable would be another feature to love…

  66. Natalie Robinson says:

What nice colors…batiks are so calming and unique! Happy New Year Patricia! 🙂

  67. Carla S says:

  68. Valleyliz says:

I love batiks because of the colours. The saturation is wonderful. As well the designs can be totally abstract or so variable that they can be used anywhere. The fabric is easy to work on especially when cutting and piecing. Pressing creates crisp defined seams. When machine quilting is finished and you show at guild show and tell you get oohs and ahs no matter your quilt design.
