high tea in victoria
By Patricia Belyea
VICTORIA BC Yesterday was my last day in Victoria BC for awhile so I got myself over to Victoria Art Gallery to catch the Fanciful Banko show. The over 100-piece Japanese collection, donated by Carol Potter Peckham, included teapots, cups, vases, and plates.
I was completely taken by the charm and whimsy of the teapots—with delightful shapes and crazy spouts.
Canadian born and raised, Carol’s professional career was at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. It was there where she started collecting banko ceramics.
I wonder when Carol recognized that she was actually collecting banko. Did she have three and then her passion for more was ignited? Carol must have been so excited when she discovered another wonderful piece.
Four years ago I counted 42 bolts of vintage yukata cotton in a bin in my dining room. It was then that I realized that I wanted to go for 100. How many bolts do I have today? Over 450—with 28 arriving from Tokyo today! It’s so much fun to find more gorgeous fabric.
